The Future of Pet Probiotics Starts Here
Targeted. Tested. Trusted. Because your dog deserves a microbiome
designed by nature and validated by science.
As a functional medicine veterinarian focusing on root-cause healing, I've spent decades helping animals reclaim their health by working with their biology, not against it. That process begins in the gut, where trillions of microorganisms influence every aspect of your pet’s health: digestion, immunity, metabolism, cognition, and even behavior.
But not all probiotics are created equal. Most pet probiotics on the market are human strains—never adapted to the metabolic, immune, or thermal environment of dogs or cats. They’re not designed to survive the journey through a carnivore’s GI tract. And many lack evidence of efficacy in the species they’re sold for.
That’s why I developed PRIMITIVE PROBIOTICS™, a radically different, science-driven approach to rebuilding your dog’s microbiome using the very strains nature intended: from wild canids, healthy domestic dogs, and living soil.
Emerging research now confirms that species-specific probiotics, isolated from healthy members of the same species, offer more targeted benefits. These strains are naturally adapted to the host animal’s microbiome, pH, bile levels, temperature, and immune landscape.
Inspired by Nature. Backed by Science. Built for Dogs.
Primitive Probiotics™ blends three distinct microbial ecosystems that together create a resilient, well-adapted, and functional gut flora:
1. Ancestral Strains
These strains are isolated from wild wolves and represent the ancient microbial allies that dogs evolved with: robust, immune-priming, and genetically aligned with the canine body.
2. Species-Specific Strains
Sourced from healthy domestic dogs, these strains are uniquely adapted to the stressors and diets of modern life. They’re highly colonizable and provide targeted support for digestion, immunity, and stress tolerance.
3. Soil-Based Organisms (SBOs)
Spore-forming probiotics like Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus clausii are natural survivors. They resist heat, stomach acid, and antibiotics; modulating inflammation and restoring balance when your dog needs it most.
This triad is more than just a probiotic; it’s a complete microbiome restoration system. Together, they create a truly adaptive, robust, and functional microbiome for modern dogs.
Why Three Types of Microbes Matter
| Type | Source | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Ancestral Strains | Wild canids (wolves) | Align with the evolutionary canine gut ecosystem |
| Species-Specific Strains | Healthy domestic dogs | Optimized for modern pet lifestyles and diets |
| Soil-Based Organisms (SBOs) | Natural soil environments | Resilient, enzyme-producing, immune-regulating |
This triple-ecosystem approach restores microbial biodiversity, something no single-strain or lab-grown formula can achieve.

Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG
One of the world’s most researched strains; reduces allergic reactivity and supports the gut-brain axis.
Saccharomyces boulardii
Probiotic yeast that halts diarrhea, protects the gut lining, and reduces inflammation.
Lactiplantibacillus plantarum LP815 (GABA Probiotic)
Produces GABA—a natural calming compound that regulates mood, sleep, and aggression
New: GABA Probiotic LP815™

For Calmer, More Emotionally Balanced Dogs
LP815 is a breakthrough probiotic strain that naturally produces GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid); an inhibitory neurotransmitter that calms the nervous system by regulating how quickly neurons fire. Unlike traditional calming supplements, this probiotic acts within the gut, creating a lasting calming effect through the gut–brain axis.
LP815 Clinical Results in Dogs:
- 46% of dogs had anxiety; 26% had aggression at baseline
- After 4 weeks on LP815, dogs had:
- Reduced fear- and noise-based aggression
- More restful and consistent sleep
- Improved mood and reduced reactivity
- Better energy and emotional balance
- Faster settling after owner departure
Zero adverse effects were reported in over 1,120 doses. Dogs of all breeds and diets tolerated it extremely well.

Gut Health Is the Missing Link
If your dog struggles with allergies, anxiety, chronic GI issues, or low energy, start by restoring the microbiome. A balanced gut fuels every system in the body, from immune strength to emotional regulation.
What’s NOT in PRIMITIVE PROBIOTICS
With common gut conditions like small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), prebiotics can worsen symptoms because they act as fuel for bacteria in the small intestine (good and bad alike), intensifying bloating, gas and discomfort. However, certain targeted probiotics may help by shifting the microbial balance, reducing populations of harmful species, and supporting gut barrier function without feeding the overgrowth. Strains such as Saccharomyces boulardii or specific soil-based spore-forming bacteria are less ikely to contribute to excessive fermentation and may aid in crowding out problematic microbes while calming inflammation, making them a more strategic choice than prebiotics during active SIBO. For this reason, we don’t include prebiotics in our formula.
The Perfect Partner for Probiotics: Pumpkin
Organic pumpkin fiber is not just a digestive aid; it’s a true superfood and functional food that delivers powerful health benefits beyond basic nutrition. Rich in both soluble and insoluble fiber, it supports healthy digestion from start to finish. Soluble fiber helps regulate blood sugar and slows digestion for better nutrient absorption, while insoluble fiber adds bulk to the stool and promotes regular, firm bowel movements. This dual- action fiber profile makes pumpkin the perfect partner for probiotics, creating an ideal gut environment that helps beneficial bacteria establish, survive, and thrive.
As a functional food, organic pumpkin brings more than fiber to the table. It’s packed with naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, like beta-carotene (vitamin A precursor), potassium, and magnesium; that nourish the gut lining, reduce inflammation, and support the immune system. These nutrients play a critical role in maintaining the integrity of the gastrointestinal tract and bolstering defenses against harmful microbes. Functional foods are defined by their ability to offer targeted health benefits, and pumpkin delivers, calming irritated GI tracts, improving stool quality, and contributing to overall gut resilience.
Unlike prebiotic supplements or isolated prebiotic compounds that can cause small intestinal bacteria overgrowth (SIBO), organic pumpkin fiber is a whole-food ingredient that dogs’ bodies recognize, utilize, and respond to in a balanced, positive way. Its gentle yet effective action makes it suitable for daily use in dogs of all ages, including those with food sensitivities or chronic digestive issues. When combined with a robust blend of species-specific probiotics, pumpkin transforms a simple supplement into a powerful gut-health formula; balancing the microbiome, improving immune readiness, and supporting consistent, comfortable elimination. It’s the natural choice for dogs needing gut support that’s both science-backed and a perfect bowel balancer.
PRIMITIVE PROBIOTICS™ isn’t just a supplement, it’s a strategy to support lifelong vitality from the inside out.
Give your dog the microbiome they were born to have.
