Pancreatitis refers to inflammation of the pancreas, an organ that plays a key role in digestion and blood sugar regulation. It produces digestive enzymes that help break down food in the small intestine and secretes metabolic hormones, including insulin and glucagon, that regulate blood sugar.

Under normal conditions, digestive enzymes remain inactive until they reach the small intestine. In pancreatitis, these enzymes are activated prematurely within the pancreas, triggering inflammation, tissue damage, and pain.1 Instead of entering the digestive tract, these enzymes spill into the bloodstream, which is how veterinarians diagnose the condition through testing. At the same time, this creates a temporary deficiency of digestive enzymes released into the GI tract further complicating recovery.

Understanding the Root Causes of Pancreatitis

Veterinarian examining a dog showing symptoms of pancreatitisResearch has identified several important risk factors that significantly increase the likelihood of pancreatic inflammation.2 One of the most common triggers is dietary indiscretion (aka dumpster diving). In a large case-control study, dogs that consumed unusual food items were 4 to 6 times more likely to develop pancreatitis, and dogs that gained access to garbage had a dramatic 13-fold increase in risk. Even occasional fatty table scraps can double the likelihood of a pancreatic flare. Regular feeding of fried or fatty foods also doubled the risk when given during the week preceding diagnosis3.

Age, breed, and body condition also influence risk. Dogs older than seven years of age, overweight animals, and neutered dogs (both males and spayed females) are also more commonly affected.4 Certain breeds, including Yorkshire Terriers, Cocker Spaniels, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Collies, and Boxers, appear predisposed to either acute or chronic forms of the disease.

Underlying endocrine and metabolic disorders significantly increase susceptibility. It’s important to address all potential underlying root causes of pancreatitis to prevent recurrences. Diabetes raises pancreatitis risk by up to twelvefold, while Cushing’s disease increases it more than four times. Elevated triglycerides are a key link between these conditions and pancreatic inflammation. Hypertriglyceridemia, or elevated circulating blood fats, appears to be a key mechanism linking metabolic dysregulation, diabetes, and pancreatic inflammation.5 Controlling triglyceride levels is crucial for minimizing an animal’s risk for recurrent pancreatitis.

Hypothyroidism, epilepsy, and prior gastrointestinal disease and gut problems (aka dysbiosis) also contribute to increased incidence. Repeated bouts of pancreatitis can permanently damage the pancreas, reducing its ability to produce digestive enzymes and increasing the likelihood of diabetes due to tissue scarring.6

Why Pancreatic Support Should Start Early

Digestive enzymes reduce the workload on the pancreas by assisting in the breakdown of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. This can be most helpful for high-risk animals or those recovering from pancreatic inflammation.

Omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA from sustainable, clean marine sources, help regulate inflammatory pathways and provide additional protective benefits. Research shows they reduce oxidative stress, lower triglycerides, and calm inflammatory cytokine activity.7 A 2024 analysis of multiple studies found that omega-3 supplementation significantly reduced complications and improved outcomes in patients with pancreatitis8. Animal studies suggest omega-3s work by calming inflammation throughout the body. Because pet foods are not required to contain enough EPA/DHA to meet minimum requirements, most pets are deficient (unless you’re supplementing them at mealtimes, which is my recommendation for all pets).

Diagnosing and Treating Pancreatitis

When you bring your pet to the vet with symptoms like vomiting, loss of appetite, or belly pain, they'll run some detective work. The most reliable blood test is the canine or feline pancreatic lipase (cPL or Spec cPL) test, which measures a specific lipase enzyme released by an inflamed pancreas9. Your vet will likely also recommend an abdominal ultrasound to evaluate the pancreas directly. The best diagnoses come from combining blood tests, imaging, and your dog's symptoms.

The foundation of pancreatitis treatment is supportive care, helping your dog's body heal while keeping them comfortable. This includes IV fluids to restore hydration (really important if your dog has been vomiting), pain medication (pancreatitis hurts!), and anti-nausea drugs to stop vomiting and help your dog feel well enough to eat. Antibiotics usually aren't needed unless there's a secondary infection identified on bloodwork10.

Why Vets No Longer Recommend Fasting

One of the most important shifts in pancreatitis care is the move away from prolonged fasting. You may have heard that dogs with pancreatitis should be starved for several days to "rest the pancreas." Research now shows that this approach is officially outdated and may actually be harmful. When the gut is empty for too long, the intestinal lining starts to break down, which can lead to serious complications across many species.

Current guidelines recommend offering small amounts of bland, highly digestible pureed food as soon as vomiting stops and your dog shows interest in eating, generally within 24 hours11. Early nutrition supports gut integrity and improves recovery.

Nutrition

During recovery from pancreatitis, easily digestible foods help reduce digestive workload while supporting nutrient absorption. Lean proteins such as turkey, white fish, and egg whites are commonly used during the first few weeks. Add omega-3 fatty acids (DHA/EPA) at the time of feeding.

Herbal teas, such as ginger and chamomile, can help with recovery. Ginger tea has long been used to soothe the digestive tract. Compounds in ginger help reduce nausea, support stomach motility, and calm inflammatory signaling in the gastrointestinal tract in pets experiencing stomach upset. Chamomile tea is a gentle digestive herbal option that helps relax intestinal muscles and relieve gut irritation. It also has mild anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic effects that can help support pets experiencing digestive discomfort. You can add a teabag to warm bone broth to create a soothing, hydrating, healing snack, treat, or first meal for animals recovering from pancreatitis.

Feeding Recommendations

During recovery, pets benefit from small, frequent meals of easily digestible ingredients. Adequate caloric intake is more important than extreme fat restriction.

At home, you’ll continue this bland diet several times daily until your pet shows signs of improvement, then gradually wean onto highly digestible, low-AGE, nutritionally complete meals over 7-10 days, once your vet gives the okay.

If this is your animal’s first bout of pancreatitis, and the PLI returns to normal, most animals can return to eating healthy, well-formulated, nutritionally complete diets.

If your animal has had severe or recurring episodes or if bloodwork remains abnormal, proactive vets suggest feeding a fresh, low-AGE therapeutic pancreatic diet to reduce digestive stress and lower the likelihood of further episodes.

Rethinking the Low-Fat Diet Myth

For years, fat has been blamed as the primary cause of pancreatitis. Emerging research tells a different story. Reviews of available studies suggest that routine dietary fat levels are not consistently associated with disease onset.12 A 2025 study compared low-fat and higher-fat diets in dogs recovering from pancreatitis. Both groups recovered equally well, with no difference in how quickly they healed or how their pancreas looked afterward. Interestingly, the dogs on the very low-fat diet developed liver problems because they weren't getting enough healthy fats, unlike the dogs in the other group13.

A 2026 review examined all available evidence and concluded that the link between dietary fat and pancreatitis in dogs is much weaker than previously thought. Many dogs on normal diets never develop pancreatitis, and some dogs on strict low-fat diets still do14. For prevention, the research points to simple steps: secure your trash cans, skip the fatty table scraps, avoid sudden diet changes, and keep your dog at a healthy weight. Adding fish oil for its anti-inflammatory benefits15 and digestive enzymes to support the pancreas is also recommended by the proactive veterinary community.

For most animals, the real issue is not fat itself, but the quality of the fat, and how it is introduced. Sudden ingestion of large amounts of cooked, oxidized, or highly processed fat can overwhelm the pancreas. In contrast, dogs adapted to consistent, whole-food diets rich in natural, unadulterated, clean fats often tolerate them well. Sled dogs are a perfect example. Sled dogs routinely consume diets in which more than 50 to 60% of calories come from raw meat-based diets brimming with lots of unprocessed fat, yet they rarely develop pancreatitis, which is very uncommon. When dogs are gradually adapted to these energy-dense diets, their metabolism shifts toward efficient fat oxidation and ketone production, allowing them to burn fat as a primary fuel without overwhelming pancreatic function.

This demonstrates an important adaptive evolutionary principle: consistent dietary exposure allows the body to process large amounts of unadulterated fat safely, and it highlights a key point about pancreatitis: fat itself is not usually the problem. A sudden intake of cooked, damaged fat is. When an otherwise low-fat-fed dog suddenly consumes a large, unexpected fatty meal such as bacon grease, fried foods, or garbage, the pancreas can be overwhelmed, triggering inflammation.16

Another underrecognized contributor to pancreatic stress is the quality of fats being consumed. Oxidized and rancid fats found in rendered, ultra-processed foods that are repeatedly heated and stored for long periods generate highly inflammatory compounds, such as advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and advanced lipid oxidation end products (ALEs).

Therapeutic Pancreatitis Diets and Why Fresh, Low-AGE Diets Matter

While excessive fat intake can stimulate pancreatic enzyme secretion, modern research suggests that pancreatic inflammation is influenced by several metabolic factors beyond fat content alone.

The primary goals of therapeutic diets for pancreatitis are to reduce inflammatory signaling, stabilize metabolism, provide highly digestible nutrients, and minimize oxidative stress within pancreatic tissue. Fresh, well-formulated pancreatitis diets meet these goals. Whole fresh foods contain far fewer oxidized fats and significantly lower concentrations of high-heat-generated compounds than high-temperature processed foods.

Exposure to high levels of dietary AGEs and ALEs has also been shown to damage the pancreas through oxidative stress and activation of inflammatory pathways that promote pancreatic injury and contribute to pancreatitis17. Studies show that AGEs can damage pancreatic tissue by increasing oxidative stress, activating NADPH oxidase pathways, and triggering inflammatory signaling, leading to pancreatic cell injury and dysfunction.18

Thermal processing of foods rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (like the rendered fats in kibble) is a primary driver of ALE formation; heat generates reactive carbonyl compounds from oxidized lipids that permanently modify proteins in the food before it's even eaten. [5 A 2023 animal model study confirmed that dietary ALEs from heat-processed foods damaged the intestinal barrier, caused abnormal liver function, and promoted lipid accumulation — demonstrating that these compounds cause real organ damage after ingestion [6]

So kibble is the worst choice for animals with pancreatitis, because of the levels of damaged fats and unwanted ALE tagalongs that inevitably come with these “fast foods”. In contrast, fresh, real foods contain intact nutrients, food-based antioxidants, and higher moisture levels, which support digestive health and metabolic stability.

Multipath Pancreatitis Protocols

Lifestyle factors play an important role in both prevention and recovery from pancreatitis:

  • Maintaining a lean body condition is one of the most important preventive strategies. Excess adipose tissue produces inflammatory cytokines that increase systemic inflammation and metabolic stress.
  • Avoiding sudden dietary changes or high-fat meals (especially if feeding processed foods) is also important, particularly for dogs with a history of pancreatitis or lipid metabolism disorders.
  • Avoid ultra-processed foods and treats.

Medications Associated with Pancreatitis

Certain medications have been associated with pancreatitis; in some cases, these drugs appear to trigger pancreatic inflammation directly, while in others, they increase metabolic stress or alter lipid metabolism. Drug-associated pancreatitis is most likely to occur when these medications are used in animals with additional risk factors (obesity, hyperlipidemia, endocrine disease, or prior pancreatic inflammation)19. Drugs most commonly linked to pancreatitis include:

  • Azathioprine
  • Potassium bromide
  • Phenobarbital
  • L-asparaginase
  • Organophosphate insecticides
  • Furosemide
  • Tetracycline antibiotics
  • Sulfonamide antibiotics
  • Trimethoprim-sulfa combinations
  • Metronidazole
  • Estrogen-containing medications
  • Glucocorticoids (prednisone, prednisolone, dexamethasone)
  • Chemotherapy agents (vincristine, cyclophosphamide)
  • Didanosine and other antiviral medications
  • Valproic acid

Key Supplements for Pancreatitis Support

Digestive Enzymes

Supplementing with enzymes helps compensate for reduced pancreatic function and supports nutrient breakdown. This reduces digestive stress and improves nutrient absorption without suppressing the body’s natural enzyme production. Look for formulas containing protease, lipase, and amylase, along with supportive ingredients like ox bile, taurine, bromelain, and papain.

It’s not uncommon for animals with pancreatitis to have secondary gallbladder sludging, so supplemental ox bile and taurine help keep bile flowing during subclinical pancreatic inflammation.

In nature, meat-eating animals consume the entire prey animal, including organs that contain a wide array of biologically active compounds. The prey’s pancreas naturally provides the predator with an abundant amount of digestive enzymes: amylase, lipase, and protease. When dogs and cats eat modern diets, even fresh raw meat diets designed to mimic ancestral feeding patterns, these specific glandular tissues are absent unless pet parents source fresh pancreas tissue to add to the diet. Some pet parents also recreate this natural exposure by sourcing freeze-dried organs and glands, but obtaining clean, consistent glandular tissue can be difficult.

Proactive vets have used targeted digestive enzyme supplementation for the treatment and prevention of chronic pancreatitis for decades, and conventional vets have used it to treat digestive enzyme deficiencies. However, sadly, most vets still wait to suggest enzyme supplementation until there’s a profound deficiency20. Supplying digestive enzymes before a crisis state helps support digestion by assisting the breakdown of proteins (proteases), fats (lipases), and carbohydrates (amylases), particularly in animals experiencing digestive stress or reduced pancreatic enzyme production.

Veterinary medicine has long recognized the importance of glandular function in digestion and metabolism; veterinarians prescribe desiccated porcine thyroid (Thyroid USP) to treat hypothyroidism and a prescription powdered porcine pancreas as replacement therapy for exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), a condition in which the pancreas has lost more than 85% of its ability to secrete adequate digestive enzymes. These treatments can dramatically improve nutrient absorption, body weight, and quality of life in affected animals. Using OTC digestive enzymes before a crisis state is something most integrative and functional medicine vets recommend.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids (DHA/EPA)

These crucial fatty acids help reduce inflammatory signaling and suppress NF-κB activation, a key inflammatory pathway involved in pancreatitis. Experimental models show omega-3 fatty acids reduce pancreatic inflammation and oxidative stress. Most importantly, they don’t worsen pancreatitis; they significantly improve outcomes in mammalian species. A 2025 meta-analysis of nine randomized controlled human trials demonstrated that omega-3 supplementation during acute pancreatitis significantly decreased mortality by 70%, reduced infectious complications by 55%, and shortened hospital stays21. A randomized, double-blind, controlled trial in patients with severe acute pancreatitis found that fish oil administration resulted in significantly lower levels of inflammation markers, fewer organ failures, shorter ICU stays, and shorter total hospital stays compared with controls22 Cell studies confirm that omega-3s suppress inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6) and prevent pancreatic cell death by blocking oxidative stress pathways.

Acetyl-L-carnitine supports mitochondrial energy production and helps transport fatty acids into mitochondria for metabolism23.

Curcumin reduces oxidative stress and suppresses inflammatory signaling pathways, including NF-κB. Curcumin lowers pancreatic enzyme levels and reduces inflammatory cell infiltration in pancreatitis models24.

Berberine activates AMPK metabolic signaling pathways and inhibits TGF-β pathways involved in pancreatic fibrosis25. Studies show berberine reduces inflammatory injury during pancreatitis.

Probiotics help maintain gut barrier integrity and reduce systemic inflammation. Emerging research suggests that certain probiotic strains may support recovery from pancreatitis26 by strengthening the intestinal barrier, reducing inflammatory signaling, and limiting bacterial translocation from the gut into the bloodstream. Maintaining a stable microbiome is important because gut barrier disruption and microbial imbalance can worsen pancreatic inflammation during pancreatitis. Beneficial strains include:

  • Lactobacillus plantarum – helps strengthen intestinal barrier function and reduce inflammatory cytokines.
  • Lactobacillus rhamnosus – supports immune balance and protects intestinal lining integrity.
  • Lactobacillus acidophilus – helps stabilize the microbiome and inhibit pathogenic bacteria.
  • Bifidobacterium longum – reduces gut inflammation and supports healthy microbial diversity.
  • Bifidobacterium bifidum – helps reinforce intestinal mucosal defenses.
  • Saccharomyces boulardii – a beneficial yeast that helps restore microbiome balance and reduce gastrointestinal inflammation.

Proactive Prevention Strategies for Long-term Protection

  • Secure trash and prevent access to inappropriate foods
  • Maintaining a healthy body weight is one of the most effective preventive strategies. Obesity increases inflammatory cytokine production and metabolic dysfunction that can stress pancreatic tissue.
  • Avoid oxidized, rancid, feed-grade treats and ultra-processed pet foods. High-heat processing and prolonged storage can damage fats, leading to lipid oxidation byproducts that increase oxidative stress and inflammatory signaling in tissues, including the pancreas.
  • Avoid sharing broiled, fried, or grilled table scraps, and fatty foods like turkey skin, gravy, bacon, and ham
  • Introduce new treats and foods gradually

Proactive nutrition to reduce pancreatitis incidence emphasizes low-AGE intake, anti-inflammatory nutrients, and whole-food, minimally processed ingredients. Balanced, fresh diets containing high-quality protein, moderate healthy fats, and antioxidant-rich foods support pancreatic health over the long term.

By focusing on prevention, early support, and biologically appropriate nutrition, we can significantly reduce the burden on the pancreas and improve outcomes for our pets.

When we support the body’s natural processes rather than working against them, we give our animals the best chance to heal, recover, and thrive.
