Thousands of Plastic Bits in Your Pet’s Food Bowl?

A Problem Too Big to Ignore

For a long while, when the topic of microplastics in pet food came up, it was treated as a fringe concern, something only the most cautious worried about. That’s changed. The research has piled up so quickly over the past couple of years that I’ve had trouble keeping up. And I read literature every day. So let’s take a closer look at some recent studies: how much are our pets being exposed to simply by eating their food?

A new peer-reviewed study in Environmental Pollution titled "The Occurrence and Characterization of Microplastics in Dry Pet Food: Investigating Geographical Variations Between European and South American Markets”1 set out to answer part of that question by comparing pet food brands on opposite sides of the world to see whether this was just a small, localized problem or something bigger.

Dry pet food from both Ecuador and Spain confirmed that contamination was widespread and global, not confined to one country's manufacturing standards. Loose food sold in bulk had significantly more microplastics than sealed bags. In South America, they found the average dog consumes 500 pieces of microplastics per day; in Spain, about 400 pieces per day from the average bag of dry food.

Nearly half of these particles, about 44%, measured less than 20 microns, making them small enough to cross the gut barrier and enter the body. According to the study, 70–80% of the microplastics found in pet food are tiny fibers, similar to those shed from clothing, packaging, and industrial materials.

What Additional Research Is Showing Us

A 2026 study published in Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry examined 38 commercial pet food products sold in the United Kingdom2, including dog food, cat food, and hedgehog food. Researchers found microplastics in 76% of the products tested, and 84% of the brands had at least one contaminated sample. Only three of the 19 brands tested had no detectable contamination in any sample.

The researchers identified several different types of plastic polymers, including polyester, polyacrylamide, polyethylene, and polypropylene. They also found an interesting difference between food formats.

Dry food contained more particles per gram than wet food. But because canned food contains more moisture, an animal generally needs to consume more of it to obtain the same amount of calories. So simply saying “dry food had more particles per gram” does not necessarily tell us which type of diet results in the greatest daily exposure.

Another study titled “A Plastic Diet for Pets,” published in Environmental Pollution3, examined commercial dry pet food in Spain and detected microplastics in every sample tested.

That study found higher levels in dog food than cat food, and the researchers identified several possible sources, including environmental contamination, manufacturing processes, and packaging.

This isn’t a single-industry problem with one simple solution. Multiple points along the journey from manufacturing facility to your pet’s bowl can introduce plastic particles into the food.

Don't Forget About the Food Bowl Itself

Another source of exposure is much easier to address and correct. The food containers and bowls we use every day can contribute to our pets' overall plastic exposure. If your dog or cat eats and drinks from plastic bowls every day, and those bowls are exposed to heat (from the dishwasher), there’s a good chance some of that plastic winds up in your pet. I prefer stainless steel or high-quality ceramic.

We don't need to fear every piece of plastic in our homes. But when there are easy swaps that reduce unnecessary exposure, why not make them?

And Then There Are PFAS

Unfortunately, microplastics aren't the only environmental contaminants that wind up in our pets. A newly published study from researchers at the University of Bologna and Utrecht University examined PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, in 179 dogs and 84 cats.4

PFAS are called “forever chemicals” because many of them persist in the environment for very long periods. They're used in stain-resistant and flame-resistant products, nonstick coatings, food packaging, and other consumer products.

Researchers detected multiple PFAS compounds in the blood of both dogs and cats. PFOS was detected in essentially every animal sampled, and researchers found geographic differences in PFAS levels among dogs from different regions.

Importantly, the study did not establish that PFAS caused the endocrine disorders being investigated. What the research does tell us is that our companion animals are being exposed to persistent environmental chemicals. And because dogs and cats share our homes, food, dust, air, and water, their exposure patterns give us another window into the environmental chemicals surrounding all of us.

A Little Hope in the PFAS Story

I know PFAS research can feel discouraging. These chemicals are incredibly persistent; they're found in everyday products, and completely avoiding exposure is nearly impossible. But what can the body do to protect itself?

A 2025 study from researchers at the University of Cambridge gives us one reason to be hopeful. Scientists identified several species of bacteria that naturally live in the human gut and discovered that these microbes could actually absorb PFAS from their surroundings.

The researchers introduced nine of these bacterial species into mice to create a more human-like gut microbiome. After the mice consumed PFAS, the bacteria rapidly accumulated the chemicals, which the animals then eliminated in their feces. In some cases, the bacteria removed between 25% and 74% of the PFAS they were exposed to.5

To me, this is an encouraging reminder that the microbiome is far more than a collection of organisms that merely help digest food. Our gut microbes can interact with compounds in our environment in ways we’re just beginning to understand.

Microplastics and forever chemicals are part of a much larger picture. Our beloved animals live in a very different world from the one their ancestors evolved in. Pesticides and herbicides, flame retardants, household chemicals, PFAS, air pollution, contaminated dust, cleaning products, synthetic fragrances, and many other compounds now impact their daily lives.

Their food can also be exposed to contaminants during farming, processing, manufacturing, storage, and packaging. Their bodies also have to process this environmental load every single day.

Our job is to support those natural systems however we can, not overwhelm them.

Your Pet’s Body Is Incredibly Intelligent

Rather than thinking of detoxification as something drastic, like a week-long juice cleanse for your pet, think of it as something your pet's body is already doing 24 hours a day. The liver, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract, lymphatic system, lungs, and skin are constantly working to metabolize, transform, eliminate, and protect against substances the body doesn't need.

What can we do to support our pet’s natural ability to detox?

Start by Reducing Exposure

Before you reach for a supplement, look around your home. The most effective way to reduce a toxin burden is to reduce unnecessary exposure at the source.

I recommend storing dry pet food in its original sealed bag rather than pouring it directly into a plastic storage container. If you intend to use a container, stainless steel or glass are far better options. Once you open frozen or refrigerated fresh food, transfer the remaining food into a glass storage container immediately.

Buy a bag size you can reasonably finish before the food sits around for months. Avoid pet food that has been sitting exposed in a self-serve bulk bin. Use stainless steel or ceramic food and water bowls instead of plastic, and never heat food in plastic containers.

Your pet’s broader environment matters as much as their food. Reduce exposure to pesticides in lawn treatments and flea and tick preventives. Regular vacuuming and dusting reduces the household dust your pet is exposed to, especially since dogs spend so much time close to the floor where dust settles.

Where you have the option, choose pet beds, rugs, furniture, and household products with fewer stain-resistant or highly treated synthetic materials. Covering stain- or water-resistant-treated surfaces or fabric with an organic sheet or blanket keeps a layer between pets and direct contact.

You don't need to replace everything in your house tomorrow. Start with the things your pet touches and breathes near every single day. Providing a comfy, organic pet bed offers an alternative to lying on chemically treated carpets.

Feed the Gut

One of the most important things you can do to help your pet handle environmental stress is to support the gastrointestinal tract. The gut isn't simply a tube that moves food from one end to the other. It's a major immune organ, a home for trillions of microorganisms, and one of the body's primary barriers between the outside world and internal tissues.

Fresh, organic, minimally processed foods, appropriate fiber, and a diverse, resilient microbiome all work together. A healthy gut barrier can help regulate what’s allowed to cross from the digestive tract into general circulation. Healthy digestion means better nutrient absorption, better stool quality, and better support for every other organ involved in elimination.

Support the Liver and Other Detox Pathways

Detoxification was never a liver-only job. Different compounds require different exits. Some leave through bile. Some must be bound in the gut to prevent reabsorption. It is a coordinated, whole-body process involving multiple systems working together.

Supporting detoxification begins with foundational lifestyle choices:

  • Feeding a fresh, species-appropriate diet significantly reduces exposure to harmful additives and glycation products while providing the nutrients needed for cellular repair.
  • Clean, filtered water helps minimize exposure to heavy metals and chemical contaminants that can accumulate over time.
  • Improving indoor air quality by eliminating synthetic fragrances, harsh cleaning chemicals, and environmental pollutants reduces the daily toxic load your pet must process.
  • Regular physical activity supports circulation, lymphatic flow, and elimination, all of which are essential for efficiently removing toxins from the body.
  • Reducing exposure to environmental chemicals outdoors is equally important. Avoiding treated lawns, pesticides, and herbicides helps limit toxin absorption through the skin and paws.
  • Being mindful of medication use, including antibiotics, steroids, and chemical parasite preventives, also helps reduce overall toxic burden. Have a reparative plan to support the body when using pharmaceuticals.
  • Supporting the skin through regular grooming and bathing helps remove environmental residues before they are ingested during self-grooming.

There are some exceptional, natural allies to help our pets clear environmental chemical stressors from their bodies. Carnosine, glycine, and glutathione act as core antioxidants that neutralize reactive oxygen species, protect proteins, lipids, and DNA from oxidative damage, and support liver enzyme function.

Milk thistle has been extensively researched for its ability to help stabilize liver cell membranes, reduce oxidative stress, and support regeneration of damaged hepatocytes (liver cells). It’s also been shown to have anti-tumor activity in animal models.6

TUDCA is a naturally occurring bile acid that supports healthy bile flow, protects liver cells at the mitochondrial level, and reduces cellular stress when processing toxins. Research on bile acid metabolism highlights the importance of maintaining proper bile flow to prevent toxin buildup and support efficient elimination.7

Taurine is another essential nutrient that plays a critical role in detoxification, especially in cats. Taurine is required for bile acid conjugation, a process necessary for proper toxin elimination. It also supports antioxidant defenses and cellular stability. Cats cannot produce sufficient taurine on their own, making dietary intake essential. Without adequate taurine, bile flow can become compromised, reducing the body’s ability to eliminate fat-soluble toxins effectively.

Once the liver processes toxins and excretes them into bile, they enter the digestive tract.  If toxins aren’t bound in the gut, they can be reabsorbed. This is where humic and fulvic acids play a powerful role.

Sulforaphane, a compound found in cruciferous vegetables, activates the Nrf2 pathway, which regulates detoxification enzymes. Research demonstrates8 that Nrf2 activation enhances the body’s ability to:

  • Promote intestinal health
  • Decrease inflammation
  • Protect against oxidative stress

This is particularly important for eliminating modern pollutants such as:

  • Hydrocarbons
  • Plasticizers
  • Environmental chemicals

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is a key antioxidant enzyme that neutralizes highly reactive superoxide radicals, preventing oxidative damage while supporting the liver’s detoxification systems. By converting superoxide into hydrogen peroxide, SOD preserves glutathione levels, reduces inflammatory stress, and activates Nrf2 signaling, which upregulates the body’s primary detox enzymes.

Humic and fulvic acid are natural compounds derived from ancient plant matter that help:

  • Bind heavy metals and environmental toxins
  • Support gut barrier integrity
  • Promote microbial balance
  • Enhance nutrient absorption

These compounds act like a “net” in the gut, transporting toxins, heavy metals, and metabolic waste through the lymphatic and renal systems to enhance elimination. Research suggests9 these natural compounds can bind charged toxins in the gastrointestinal tract, support the gut barrier, and improve microbial balance.

For pets with significant environmental exposures or specific health concerns, targeted nutritional support is also appropriate.

What About Pulsed Detox Support?

In integrative veterinary medicine, some practitioners use periodic or pulsed nutritional support rather than continuous supplementation. For a healthy dog, that means providing targeted support for a limited period and then taking a break.

The body is designed to do this work. Sometimes our job is to provide the raw materials it needs and remove a few of the obstacles standing in its way. Giving a little detoxification support when you can is better than none at all.

Seasonal detox is another great strategy. In the summer, we have more glyphosate exposure; in winter, we might be more cooped up indoors with more dust-based chemical exposure. As seasons change, we detox and then do a longer, more comprehensive detox, maybe twice a year.

For pets with medical conditions, medication use, known toxin exposure, or compromised liver or kidney function, however, detox protocols should be individualized with veterinary guidance.

Don't Panic

I know this can feel overwhelming. You might be thinking, “My dog has eaten kibble for years. What am I supposed to do now?”

We learn more every single year about what our pets are exposed to, which helps us make better decisions in the future. We can’t eliminate every toxin.

Instead, think about cumulative exposure and focus on the changes that are realistic for your family. Better food storage. Less plastic. Cleaner water. A healthier gut. Less household dust. More fresh food when appropriate. Appropriate nutrition. These small changes can add up.

Every Small Step Makes a Difference

Microplastic contamination is a documented, peer-reviewed, and rapidly growing body of evidence that we need to pay attention to. Knowledge is power, and it expands our ability to make the best-informed choices for the animals who completely depend on us.

Reduce unnecessary exposures where you can. Pay closer attention to how your pet’s food is packaged and stored. Support their gut, because it’s working harder than ever. Your pet’s body is doing everything it can to navigate a world filled with substances it was never designed to encounter.
